Opening of ‘Changing Places’ facility at Brisbane Airport

Achievements such as this ‘Changing Places’ facility here at our Brisbane Airport is an excellent demonstration of what can be achieved when whole communities work together to address the challenges that people with disability face every day.

Disability Employment Australia (DEA) Conference 2017

Thank you for inviting me to attend the Disability Employment Australia annual conference. I imagine there will be a lot of discussion on changes to the DES program, and the disability sector more broadly.
The program changes announced earlier this year are a culmination of extensive consultations with DES providers, employers, and people with disability. DEA has been instrumental in these consultations, working with Government to find ways to improve the performance of DES so that more people with disability achieve the social, emotional and financial benefits that work brings.

Down Syndrome Australia Strategy Meeting 2017

Thank you for inviting me to talk to you today. I am sorry I can’t be with you in person for your Strategy Day, but I do want to congratulate you all for the incredibly important work you do at Down Syndrome Australia. I want to acknowledge your efforts in breaking down barriers for people with Down Syndrome by raising awareness and making communities more inclusive.

Project Open Doors launch

Whilst we hear a lot about the National Disability Insurance Scheme, that will only support 460,000 Australians with permanent and debilitating disability. There are another 3.8 million Australians who identify as living with disability – probably someone you know. Most people may have a relative or a friend who identifies with disability and these people like us want to lead the life that they choose and we need to do more to support them.

BUSHkids Conference 2017 Opening

As Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services and Patron of the Friends of BUSHkids, I am honoured today to open the BUSHkids conference. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a major reform, giving choice and control to people with disability, and our Partners in the Community, such as BUSHkids, play a key role in implementing it.
